When looking at electric SUVs in the past, the focus was mainly on battery capacity and driving range. However, the story changes a bit when it comes to large SUVs. Their bigger size, need for third-row space, and consideration for long-distance travel create a space where purely electric vehicles alone can't explain everything. This is where the Zeekr 9X gets interesting. Zeekr has a strong electric vehicle brand image, but with the 9X, it introduces a super hybrid structure closer to a plug-in hybrid SUV. It runs quietly and swiftly like an electric vehicle, but utilizes the engine for longer distances.

Why Zeekr 9X Gains Attention

The Zeekr 9X is the flagship large SUV under Zeekr, a premium brand within Geely Automobile Group. It was first unveiled at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show and later officially launched in the Chinese market. According to Zeekr's official data, it is built on the SEA-S platform with a 900V high-voltage architecture and applies the SEA Super Hybrid system.

The numbers are quite impressive. The official launch materials cite a maximum output of 1,000kW, acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in 3.1 seconds, and a pure electric driving range of 380km based on the CLTC standard. Charging from 20% to 80% takes about 8.5 minutes. Such figures in a large SUV make this vehicle stand out as more than just another new Chinese model.

Why a Hybrid SUV Instead of a Pure Electric Vehicle?

While increasing the battery size in a large SUV can extend driving range, it also raises the vehicle's cost and weight. Consumers expecting a third row and six- or seven-seat configuration often consider family trips, long-distance journeys, and highway driving. Relying solely on charging to ease all concerns proves difficult. The Zeekr 9X targets this point by operating like an electric vehicle in daily use but combining the engine and electric motors for long-distance travel. This makes it a symbolic model for consumers torn between electric SUVs and PHEVs, showcasing how premium large SUVs are evolving in the Chinese market.

Large SUV Characteristics: Size and Space

According to Paul Tan’s report, the Zeekr 9X features a large body measuring 5,239mm in length, 2,029mm in width, 1,819mm in height, and a wheelbase of 3,169mm. These dimensions clearly place it above typical midsize SUVs and justify its positioning as a flagship model with three rows. When choosing large SUVs, factors like ease of entry and exit, accessibility to the second and third rows, and comfort on long rides often matter more than power. Zeekr emphasized the large rear doors and third-row accessibility in the 9X—addressing not just surface-level luxury but reducing real inconvenience for family travel.
